“Westfield is a “magnet” community, considered one of the very best “destination communities” in Union County. With its outstanding schools, superb business district, and magnificent homes, buyers often assume that homes in Westfield will be beyond their budget. In fact, while there are many homes in the $1 million, $2 million, $3 million+ range, there are many more in the $400,000 to $800,000 range.
Westfield’s “draw” comes from its safe, picturesque boulevard-wide streets, fine Colonial and Victorian homes, a quaint yet upscale downtown, and its outstanding schools which regularly report stellar achievements by Westfield’s young people. As someone recently said
“Westfield NJ has the friendliness of a small town, and the sophistication of New York without the traffic, congestion, and crime.”
Westfield NJ – Active Youth & Family Programs … & Just Hanging Out
Westfield focuses on its youth, sponsoring active sports and recreation programs, including Little league Baseball, the YMCA and the Westfield Memorial Pool, indoor and outdoor Tennis, a racketball court, exercise facilities, and before & after school programs.
It’s not unusual for Westfield parents and children to walk downtown to enjoy lunch with friends at Starbucks, Vickie’s Diner, or Paniera’s. In the evenings – especially in the nice weather– people gather to talk and have dinner at one of Westfield’s many restaurants, which are varied, very affordable, and very accommodating.
As you walk – and nearly everyone does — you’ll notice the beautiful parks & golf facilities, and the famed 12 acre Mindowaskin Park –– itself a destination for bridal party pictures – offers summer concerts and winter ice skating, and spectacular holiday lights. And the local theater, the Rialto, has had its exterior restored to resemble that of a bygone era.
Westfield’s 30,000 residents enjoy 6.29 square miles, distinguished by 211 acres of parkland. For many, Westfield is a “first destination” because it allows them to enjoy the advantages of fine suburban living, close to the attractions of metropolitan New York, with convenient access via excellent train and bus service, and major highways.
With the panache of its thriving business district, outstanding schools, and a great community social life, Westfield is exactly what many are looking for.
Some background & other facts
Settled by immigrants from Europe more than 300 years ago, Westfield was once a popular trail for the Lenni-Lenape Indians whose heritage is remembered in names such as Lenape Trail and Manitou Circle.
Originally known as the West Fields of Elizabethtown, the community gradually took its own identity and in 1903 was incorporated as the Town of Westfield. At that time, Westfield included what is known today as Mountainside.
